As the Department of Education is now moving towards the scheduled opening of classes on August 24, 2020, some senators have asked for its postponement saying that we are not yet ready. Instead, they suggested moving the school opening in October or even a later date.
Senator Francis Tolentino appealed to DepEd to move the school opening to ensure the safety of teachers and students with regard to the growing numbers of COVID cases in the country.
“Our common and ultimate goal is the protection of our learners. There is no disagreement on that. However, different localities have varying heath circumstances, and hence will need varying approaches in the delivery of education,” said Sen. Tolentino.
“It will be wise perhaps for DepEd to consider opening classes on a per regional health and connectivity situation basis. Not only will students’ health and safety be safeguarded, but as well as the welfare of teachers who will be forced to deliver the modules to students’ homes or at the very least report to school for the distribution of modules to parents,” he added.
Tolentino also stressed that DepEd can make use of the newly signed Republic Act No. 11480 to reschedule the school opening to a much more appropriate date reminding them that they only 168 hours to craft the implementing rules and regulations of the law to fully carry it out.
“I am asking DepEd to prudently adhere with the provisions of RA 11480,” he said.
