Flexibility in Time Allotment for Learning Areas in MATATAG Curriculum (DepEd Order No. 12, s. 2024)

The Department of Education (DepEd) has unveiled flexible guidelines within the MATATAG Curriculum to help schools and teachers manage resources more effectively. This initiative, detailed in DepEd Order No. 012, s. 2024, allows schools to customize class schedules according to their specific needs and capacities, ensuring a smoother education delivery despite limitations in staffing and facilities.

The new guidelines present three options for adjusting instructional time, enabling schools to maintain core learning standards while tailoring their approach.

Option A, as specified in DepEd Order No. 10, s. 2024, maintains that all learning areas will have 45 minutes of instruction per day for five days a week, with the Homeroom Guidance Program given 45 minutes once a week.

Option B introduces flexibility by allowing uniform time allotments of 50, 55, or 60 minutes per learning area. Essential subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, and Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC)/Values Education are to be taught five times a week. Other subjects, including Edukasyong Pantahanan at Pangkabuhayan (EPP)/Technology and Livelihood Education (TLE), Music, Arts, Physical Education, and Health (MAPEH), Araling Panlipunan (AP), and Filipino, are to be taught four times a week, with the Homeroom Guidance Program continuing once a week.

Option C offers an alternative for schools where Options A and B are not feasible. Schools can propose other combinations, provided that students receive at least five hours and 30 minutes of instructional time per day. The weekly instructional time for English, Mathematics, Science, and GMRC/Values Education should be no less than 225 minutes, while EPP/TLE, MAPEH, AP, and Filipino should each receive no less than 200 minutes per week. The Homeroom Guidance Program must still be allocated at least 45 minutes per week.

Any proposed combinations under Option C must receive approval from the School Division Superintendent or an authorized representative. Schools division offices (SDOs) are tasked with providing technical assistance to schools in preparing class programs, ensuring equitable distribution of teaching loads, and safeguarding the welfare of teachers.

Implementation of these guidelines will commence in the second quarter of the school year, with DepEd committed to providing schools with the necessary technical support to adjust class programs effectively.
